(Chicago.CityRegions.Com, July 28, 2012 ) Chicago, IL - The 2012 Wimbledon Championships was recently concluded. The ultimate tennis tournament championships were held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London in the UK. It ran from the 25th of June to the 8th of July. The 2012 championships marked the 126th championship in Wimbledon history and the third Grand Slam tournament of the year.
The championships saw the prestigious tennis trophies brought home by notable singles champions, namely Roger Federer and Serena Williams, both of whom are over 30 years of age.
Roger Federer won his final match on July 8 and achieved a record-tying singles title for the 7th time. He defeated Andy Murray in a total of four sets.
Serena Williams won her title on July 7 and was seen happily celebrating with her fifth Wimbledon trophy after she beat Agnieszka Radwanska in their final match. The win is nothing new to Williams, who has 13 Grand Slam titles under her belt. But no one can deny that her 2012 victory is a meaningful one for the tennis star, considering how she was just in a hospital bed fifteen months ago and unsure whether she would be able to play tennis again. Now, Williams is expected to be a favorite at the 2012 U.S. Open, following her admirable performance at the 2012 Wimbledon.
The U.S. Open is set to begin in August and will run until September over a two-week period before and after Labor Day weekend.
Aside from the historical singles champions, tennis stars like June Yaroslava Shvedova, Marin Cilic, Andy Murray, Marcos Baghdatis, Jonathan Marray, and Frederik Nielsen. Yaroslava Shvedova beat Sara Errani last June 30 and became the first player to win a golden set in a Grand Slam tournament. Marin Cilic beat Sam Querrey on the same day after a 5-hour 31-minute match, the second longest in Wimbledon history. Another blockbuster event last June 30 was the match between Andy Murray and Marcos Baghdatis, which ended at 11:02 pm. It became the latest ever finish to a Wimbledon match.
On July 6, two days before the end of the tournament, Andry Murray also became the first Brit in 74 years to climb to the singles final.
Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen also became the first Wildcard to bring home the Gentlemen’s doubles trophy.
Famed tennis star Rafael Nadal, however, suffered a loss to Lukas Rosol. More recently, Nadal pulled out from the London 2012 Olympics, saying that he was ‘not in condition’ to play at the highly competitive and much-awaited sports event.
