The growth of the IMU market has been primarily triggered by advancements in MEMS and digital signal processing technologies. Traditional IMUs are larger in size and consume more power as compared to the available quartz-based MEMS, which are much smaller in size, less costly, and consume less power, thereby improving overall performance. These new MEMS IMUs proved to be very efficient in underwater application and are also capable of withstanding high temperature and vibration conditions and can effectively operate for much longer periods. As RLG and FOG that were mostly used in tactical grade applications were not designed to be used for longer periods, recent advancements in these quartz MEMS-based IMU will replace older technologies in the near future.
